Five people were killed and nine others were injured — including two police officers — during a mass shooting on Monday morning that took place in downtown Louisville, Ky., authorities confirmed.
Around 8:30 a.m. ET, dispatchers received a call reporting an active shooter at the Old National Bank in Louisville, Metro Police Department Deputy Chief Paul Humphrey said during a press conference. When they arrived on the scene, shots were still being fired, and authorities and the gunman exchanged fire.
Humphrey confirmed that the shooter — who has not been identified — is now deceased. The eight injured were transported to University of Louisville Hospital, and two are in critical condition, including one of the wounded officers, Humphrey said.
“We believe this is a lone gunman involved in this that did have a connection to the bank,” Humphrey said. “We’re trying to establish what that connection was to the business, but it appears he was a previous employee.”
“This is awful,” Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said during the conference. “I have a very close friend who didn’t make it today, and I have another close friend who didn’t either, and one who is at the hospital that I hope is going to make it through.”
