Do you ever marvel if what you ’re seeing is real or just part of some vast optic cabal ? That ’s a question Allison Beaufort has to face in Suzanne Geary ’s webcomicBrainchild . After a blow to the heading , Allison start seeing her schoolmate as mutant fauna — but what if that ’s their true form ?
Allison is just start her last year of college and hoping not to experience too much weirdness with her roommate , Carolyn . But her living is already a little mo uncanny . She jokes that she ’s haunted by a ghost , and it ’s clear that poltergeisty things really do chance around her . But it ’s only when she ’s unexpectedly beaned on the head that things bulge out getting rightfully strange .
It ’s not just that Allison starts seeing her friends and neighbor as bizarre , affected creatures . And it ’s not just that she ’s confronted by her own flagitious ( not to cite vicious ) döppleganger . It ’s also that she has a occult imaginativeness , one that include a cryptic message from her past . Allison has a lot to nonplus over on top of college . Is she going sore ? Or has she stumble on some obscure secret of her human beings ?
It ’s clear that Geary has a gravid slew of fun get up with designs for Allison ’s flagitious friends . ( She ’s also a very careful costumer and student of eubstance movement ; some of my favored aspects of Brainchild are the path her characters hold themselves . ) But even beyond the artwork , Geary does a really nice job of merge her boastful mysteries with the everyday nuisances of college aliveness — breakups , awkward encounters with the neighbors , balance friendships . This new supernatural lens on her world is important to Allison , of course , but it ’s not her entire life . And that ’s what leaves me looking ahead to seeing more , and rid along with Allison as she solves these whodunit .
