Very few of us will work at a single job our whole lives . Even fewer will exploit on a unmarried , ego - led task our whole lives . Spanish octogenarian Justo Gallego Martinez is an exclusion : He ’s been the sole interior designer , engineer , and mental synthesis worker on a cathedral in Madrid since 1961 .

Some critic indicate that his founding should be torn down , while others claim it ’s a monument ( local architects have even volunteer consultant for free ) .

Today , Getty Images lensman Denis Doylepublished a seriesof Modern photo on Don Justo ’s church building , showing the advance that he has made in the years that have glide by since then . These days , it seems work is go more slowly : Not only does he now play inside in the winter , he ’s on the verge of 90 — well past the ideal age for tough manual labor .
Don Justo himself , now 88 , is leave it to the church when he dies — and hop that it could eventually host church service , though , as the bare dome and bare interiors can attest , there ’s still a in force tenner of work to be done on the task . But does he even want to end up the construction ?
James Rogan , the director ofThe Madman and the Cathedral , a recent documentary about the task , think there ’s something more complex at stake here :

Justo says his only concern is to finish the cathedral , yet at every round he has made it inconceivable for himself to finish up it : everything has been commence ; nothing has been finish . But if the duomo were ever discharge what would he do ? He seems to have absorbed the romanticist ideal of the fragment : unfinished works that are historical ruining before they are even finish .
Antoni Gaudi , another Spanish designer , spring to mind : A huge section of his career was devoted to designing and building the ever - changing Sagrada Familia , a church that remain unfinished to this day , too .
Though the frenzy over Don Justo ’s work depicts him as a madman , a “ non ” architect who establish with “ trash , ” that ’s a sensational take on the truth . The chronicle of foreigner architects — a term for designers who work outside of traditional professional lapse — shows us that even humans without a permission or degree are capable of creating beautiful , utilitarian architecture .
