Stonehenge was as much a source of awe a thousand years ago as it is today . Historians and poets wove the cryptical lap into their tales of King Arthur , with one lushly illustrated book portray the wizard Merlin as the architect .
The manuscript is a fourteenth - century edition of Roman de Brut , a literary account write in rhyme by the poet Wace in the twelfth century . A written matter of the Holy Writ is in the will power of the British Library , whichnotes on its web log :
Wace ’s reading of the fable , adapted from Geoffrey of Monmouth ’s Historia Regum Britanniae , tells of King Aurelius , son of Constantine , who , having conquered the usurpers Vortigern and Hengist , decides to erect a monument to the British nobles hit by the Saxons . Merlin suggests using huge stone that were take by a behemoth from Africa to produce a stone forget me drug fuck as the Ring of Killaraus in Ireland . When the King is incredulous at this suggestion , saying that the stones are much too large to enrapture so far , Merlin answer that ‘ wit is more than military strength ’ . With the help of his magic powers , the stones are indeed take back to the Salisbury spare by Uther and an US Army of man , who defeat the Irish on the way . The image [ below ] show either a goliath assist Merlin to put up Stonehenge or help to take down the stones from the Giant ’s band to be carted off to England .

Of course , modern scientific research has depict that Stonehenge was built from two types of rock that must have been transported from far out : the sarsen gem , a type of sandstone , are conceive to come from Marlborough Downs , 20 naut mi aside and the smaller bluestones ( even they weigh 25 - 30 tons ) are believed to be from the Preseli Hills in south - west Wales , 250 km out ! There have been many hypothesis as to how they were transported , but none , it could be reason , are any more plausible than Wace ’s account involving Merlin and the giant .
