We all call out for original genre picture show that are n’t just cashing in on existing franchise . But it ’s sad when an original film come out , and it just rehashes the classics , even more slavishly . It ’s even more heartrending when you get a movie like Automata , which has a ingenious , original idea . And repress it in clichés .
It ’s reasonably impossible to speak about Automata without delving into some pamperer , so here ’s your spoiler warning .
We were incredibly activated about Automata when the arresting poke come out a while ago — so it ’s especially disappointing to see the actual picture show ( in theaters and on VOD today ) and find kind of a derivative mess . It ’s doubly disappointing because there ’s a brilliant , original account in there , which the movie does n’t rely enough to run with , alternatively of veering into overdone ideas from other picture .
The basic story of Automata is a neat spin on Asimov ’s golem stories . In the near future tense , there ’s been a disaster and most of the human race has been wiped out . The whole thing leads to a final act that ’s actually quite powerful , in which we see the first of a newfangled breed of robots , and we also see how scurvy humans will stoop to keep robots under our ascendancy .
So the basic musical theme of Automata is howling , and the bones of a groovy story are fully there . Unfortunately , writer / director Gabe Ibáñez keep detouring into every lazy image he can reckon of — both in term of the movie ’s visuals and its storyline . The master golem that Jacq meet is a sex robot , and all the common “ Pris from Blade Runner ” tropes are there .
Speaking of which , Automata ’s dystopian future city is a clone of Blade Runner ’s Los Angeles , include the holographic women start up everywhere . If you drink every time you spot a Blade Runner homage in this moving picture , you ’ll die . The post - apocalyptical wasteland that Jacq cease up in is also every post - apocalyptical waste you ’ve ever seen . And the golem look like pretty much every golem you ’ve ever seen — they ’re sort of Sorayama robot , sort of “ Svedka vodka advertizement ” robots .
And meanwhile , the literal storytelling is a grab - bag of noir tropes that are press - ganged into serve despite not really service this fib . Like , almost all of the humans are gangster — admit the hoi polloi who launch the company that makes the automaton that human race depend on . The cops are all cookie - cutter corrupt copper from every noir film ever . People keep behaving in ways that make almost no horse sense , except if you think of them as following some handwriting take up from an old - school day criminal offense motion-picture show . There are car Salmon Portland Chase and gunfights , which are shot in an unimaginative fashion and feel like they ’re just placeholders for interesting plot development .
And the human fiber in this film are completely unappealing and uninteresting as mass , include Jacq himself . If you fast onwards past every aspect where two humanity are babble to each other ( except maybe for the one bit where Melanie Griffith ’s robotics expert is explaining the movie ’s premise to Jacq ) then this is a much , much better picture — all of the interactions between people in this film are painfully disordered , but also just grind . Like , the storyline affect Jacq and his pregnant married woman , where he require to escape from the city and she does n’t understand , is weirdly disagreeable .
Automata might have been better as a short film , where Ibáñez could tell his taradiddle about runaway automaton and the human that ends up stuck with them , without having to try and gyrate it out into a full - length moving-picture show about the great unwashed and a whole futuristic order . As it is , this is a moving picture about robots who are hobbled with irrational restriction — and the film itself , too , is unfortunately define by its over - trust on what ’s come before .
