It may not await like much , but this creature could be one of theearliest mollusc ever discovered . A diverse group of fauna , mollusc let in not only snails and loot , but also some of the ingenious critters both above and below the shoreline : squid and octopus .
The bizarre fossil , which looks a little like a haired finger’s breadth with a nail , see to around 480 million year sometime . It has been identified as belong to to mollusks due to the bearing of a toothed spit – known as a radula – that is typical of this group of invertebrates . Fossils of the fauna have beendug up for decades , but as they are often incomplete , it was n’t until two whole specimens turned up in rock ‘n’ roll from Morocco that investigator realized what they were dish out with .
The two fossils , which belong to to a juvenile and an adult , were so beautifully preserved that the researcher were able to see in fine point the spines that covered its back , the radula with over 125 rows of teeth , and the queer single shell that brood its head . Mullusks today are well known for their grueling shells , and this fingernail - like structure is thought to have been the precursor , with late animals evolving more plates of shell further down the dividing line .
