Sometimes , Chas , Constantine ’s unmistakably grueling to belt down pal , can be a bit of a nobody , someone who goes along with John ’s plans with far less angst than most . But when the someone of Chas ’ daughter is stolen , we finally get to see what the taxicab - driving sidekick is capable of .
Now that we ’ve gotten a slight more scope on Zed within the confines of the television receiver show , it ’s Chas ’ twist for backstory . We match Renee , Chas ’ ex , and their daughter Geraldine , and learned how working with John gradually severalise him from them . Once upon a metre , Chas die in a fire , as did several dozen other people ( in a source , it seems , to the tragic Station club fire in Rhode Island ) . Thanks to a spell a drunken John had cast on him just minute earlier , Chas absorbed the life military unit of all the hoi polloi who die , so that he will experience one demise for each life he absorb . Chas is n’t exactly unkillable ; it just will take him a really , really farsighted metre to continue utter .
Chas , it turn out , is one of those “ with great power comes great responsibility ” type , and he uses his drawn-out deathrate to write other citizenry . The problem is that demons and demon do n’t bother to schedule their strategy around kid ’ natal day company . Even though it ’s sad that Chas has to make the alternative between his family and his moral certificate of indebtedness , it ’s squeamish to see someone on Constantine who just make their decision and accepts it . ( Okay , granted , he does n’t have the whole sent - a - kid - to - Hell business weigh on his conscience , but it ’s still nice . )
When Geraldine fall into a mysterious coma , however , it look for a moment like Chas is willing to give it all — not just his own spirit , but also his power to lay aside other people ’s life . When people set off falling into incomprehensible comas across New York , John quickly learns who is behind the affliction : Felix Faust , who is , quite befittingly , a 2nd banana tree himself — always a dark legerdemain bridesmaid , never a Bridget . Now , however , he is determined to slurp up business leader for himself using a boatload of soul steal from the comatose .
So while Felix Faust strain to step out of his hench role to become the star scoundrel , Chas must be John Constantine . While Zed and John endeavor to deal with Faust ’s handiwork themselves , Chas offer Faust something juicier than Geraldine ’s soul : the 31 souls he ’s still harboring in his own body . But while it looks like Chas is going to take himself out of the secret plan permanently , he actually has something better in mind . He uses a magic from Constantine ’s playbook ( illusion ) and one of John ’s actual mystic items ( Achilles ’ tendon ) and a small something of his own : a grenade . Chas and Felix Faust both go boom , finish Felix ’s trance . Oh , Faust , you really should n’t be alone in a room with a pissed - off father who can follow back from the dead .
As if Chas needed to be more loveable after all that , he ends the sequence by think his soul donor . He does n’t just use his extra souls to save multitude ; he also honors the hoi polloi the soulfulness belonged to . He keep a scrapbook of the mass who give way in the fire and tells Geraldine about them to keep them alive . Geraldine ’s somebody is n’t mere currency , and to Chas , neither is anyone else ’s .
John also gets his own “ Aww ” moment , although I ’m not sure what it ’s doing at this point in the show . At one spot , Zed communes with the sprightliness world for speak with the comatose Geraldine . It prove a dangerous move , but as Zed recovers , she tells John that she spoke to his mother and that Mama Constantine articulate John was n’t responsible for her death . Huh . In the pilot light , John said that he hope to connect with his mother was the repel force behind his mysterious dabbling . And now he ’s made a connection , albeit in an indirect means . Is this a sign that John may ask Zed to commune with his mother in the future ? Or did the writers want to check that John stupefy some solace in that department before the show ends ?
