Doctor Who ’s fourth episode proves it : little terror and creepiness are Steven Moffat ’s comfort geographical zone . “ The Time Of Angels ” is everything we ’d hoped for when Moffat took over as showrunner of Britain ’s science - fable institution . Spoilers ahead …

So yes , “ The Time Of Angels ” borrow liberally from Moffat ’s previous stories “ Blink ” and “ Silence In The Library ” — and not just by reintroducing the Weeping Angels and River Song . ( We also set about the squad of redshirts and the numb somebody talk via a communicator , among other thing . ) But Moffat recombined these elements into something all new and thrilling .

If the motif for Moffat ’s first year of Who has been “ faerie tale , ” then the war cry for “ The Time Of Angels ” was “ ghost chronicle . ” And really , yay . Our crew speculation into a maze of the dead to look for a sepulchral Isidor Feinstein Stone statue that can either kill you or nuke you back in prison term haphazardly . And there are ghost everywhere — the Doctor ’s whole human relationship with River Song seems to be obsess by a low army of ghosts from her past and his time to come . Meanwhile , Amy Pond is being haunted by something that neither she nor the Doctor is in full aware of yet .

But meanwhile , this episode just crackled with ideas and creative energy — you could feel Moffat ’s psyche working full - careen to number up with nerveless set piece that boost the fibre instead of just being a nerveless set piece . ( Not that there ’s anything wrong with a coolheaded set slice . ) The opening sequence , where River Song finds a unique way to convey with the Doctor across 12,000 age and then throws herself out an air lock , just gets cool when you watch it for the tenth metre . ( Honestly , if River Song had gotten such a coolheaded intro the first clock time around , I think I would have taken to her a bit more . ) The Doctor ’s final speech is genuinely brilliant . The installment is so full of break up great dialogue , thatthe IMDB quote listis chock full and still seems to be missing half the effective credit line . The writing is that good .

I ’d care that River Song , being apparently one of Moffat ’s favored creations and someone who can go toe - to - toe with the Doctor , would throw Amy Pond into the shadower — but Karen Gillan is at her downright best in this episode . You ’d never trust this was the first sequence she and Matt Smith filmed in the roles . She ’s entirely assured and just burst with personality . The way she teases the Doctor , the awesome pitch of the “ Anybody need me ? Anybody ? ” fleck , and the splendid “ Ever try not blinking ? ? ” import — she ’s almost like an anime fibre or something .

So yeah — awesome hooey , and despite bringing back some older theme , it feel totally refreshful and amazing . If I expressed any frustration with the first pair of outings of Steven Moffat ’s Doctor Who , it ’s only because I know he was adequate to of this .
