The Garmin Virb Elite wasone of our preferred action camsa year ago , which was a crowing surprisal from a fellowship known more for pilotage and mutation picket . What we do know is that , as is , without an additional case , it ’s waterproofed to 164 metrical unit ( 50 meters ) . That ’s more than 30 feet deeper than the Hero4 in its standard case . Impressive .
The shot modes have generate better , too . The Virb XE ( which is the mellow - close of the two new Virbs ) can now go up to 1080p/60fps and 1440p/30fps . Yes , that ’s far cry from the current high - ending cams , theHero4 BlackandSony ’s 4 K Action Camwhich can pip at 4K/30fps and 1080p/120fps , but it ’s an improvement over last class , for sure . The lower - conclusion Virb X is still restrain to 1080p/30fps . The XE has a “ pro mode ” with more manual adjustments over white - equilibrium , gloss , asperity , etc . There is quotation of trope stabilisation on the XE , but we bear that ’s digital stabilization , rather than optical . Still , that ’s a feature a lot of people like .

Both new Virbs have freshly design microphone , which is a position the first gen was in spades lacking . Basically , that ’s puts the XE right in the same price range as the Hero4 Silver , which isour current recommended action camerafor most masses .
