As House of the Dragon gear up to take us back to Westeros , we ’re finally get some clarity as to what went awry in the last few seasons ofGame of Thrones . In aNew York Timesarticle , A Song of Ice and Fire creatorGeorge R.R. Martinshed some light on the ordeal , unveil that while he was more active on earlier season — penning and read episode , helping with casting , and being present on curing — that was n’t the case with late seasons of the hit HBO serial from showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff .

Citing that he just got busy and shifted gears to focalize on thelong - delayedThe Winds of Winter , Martin shared that “ by season five and six , and certainly seven and eight , I was pretty much out of the grummet , ” which could have had some function to roleplay in what chair to the divisive finale .

Why incisively was he entrust out ? Even Martin is unsure . “ I do n’t know — you have to ask Dan and David , ” he said ( Weiss and Benioff declined to comment to the Times ) . Martin also extend a reminder that Winds of Winter — while “ very , very late”—will not resemble what we saw on the show : “ My ending will be very different . ”

So what ’s alter this time around with House of the Dragon ? “ He was very passionate about this particular narration , ” shared Miguel Sapochnik , showrunner of House of the Dragon , who also worked on Game of Thrones . He and Martin give credit to co - showrunner and writer Ryan Condal for getting him back into the telecast cosmos of Westeros . In Condal , Martin receive a kindred heart . “When we would get together we would , you know , talk like two fanboys do , ” Martin tell ; their common fandom ( including Tolkien ) head to conversations that convey Martin knotty in revisit the Targaryen epoch — so this squad seems like perhaps a more natural convulsion to keep true to the kingdom .
