Space is a huge and often empty stead , but within our own domain , thing are getting jolly crowded . There are millions of pieces of debris , from tear satellites to fall behind chunks of rockets , encircle our planet . Some say it ’s a deadly menace . But just how dangerous is this space garbage , really ?
But not everyone agrees with the tenor of the report . While he acknowledges that the hazards baffle by space junk are real , aerospace engineer Hugh Lewis of Southampton University , UK look at issue with the USNRC ’s publishing , say that Earth ’s belt of space wastefulness has yet to impersonate a serious threat :
[ The USNRC report ] paints quite an alarming impression but I retrieve we can be a fleck more upbeat , certainly if we are ruminate murder objects .

Fortunately , space is big and collisions are still very rarefied . After all , we ’ve only had four make out collisions and only one involve two intact objects . It ’s still not a ruinous situation , and we take to be deliberate about using phrases like ‘ tipping point ’ and ‘ exponential increment ’ .
We ’ve pen aboutpromising technologies that could be used to strip up our orbitin the past , but it ’s important to remember that many of these technologies have yet to move beyonda conceptual stage of maturation .

While the amount of debris besiege Earth may not have reached a “ tipping point ” per se , there is no doubt that levels of detritus are , in fact , increasing . Given this , do we really have any business enterprise falling back on the fact that “ blank is expectant ” ? After all , the oceans were once look at vast enough to withstand our dissipation here on Earth .
Regardless of your stance on the severity of space detritus in its current state , can we all just agree to not know the pooch on this one ? I , for one , would hate to see the progression of projects like deep blank space exploration impeded by the fact that we ca n’t safely will our own orbit .
