Life get jolly uncanny in the cold abyss of the recondite sea . One deep ocean oddity presented itself to researchers at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation ( CSIRO ) just the other twenty-four hours — the strange wildcat has now been referred todozensoftimesas the “ faceless fish . ” While the sobriquet is pretty fitting , this mysterious Pisces does in fact have a real name , and it even has some elements of a fount .
Multiple reservoir have confirmed to Gizmodo that this inauspicious soul is a variety of cusk eel rarely seen by man , called Typhlonus nasus . ( The Pisces ’s individuality isalso confirmed in a blog postpublished yesterday by CSIRO researcher Diane Bray . ) While Typhlonus nasus isfound throughout the Indo - west - central Pacific — in the Arabian Sea , Indonesia , Papua New Guinea , Japan and Hawaii , cart up a specimen is extremely rare . My guesswork is that living at depths of 13,000 to 16,500 understructure ( 4,000 to 5,000 meters ) has something to do with that .
If he only knew how far-famed he ’d become , ideate the look on his face ! Oh … wait#faceless#abysslife#RVInvestigatorhttps://t.co / VmtNTQH8ahpic.twitter.com / utrJZuIER9

Contrary to the naysayers , this “ faceless fish ” does have a gloss of a face , buriedunderneath its skin . “ Although very little is known about this strange fish without a face , it does have eyes — which are apparently visible well beneath the peel in smaller specimens , ” Bray wrote . “ I doubt they ’d be of much use though , ” given that it float at extreme depths where lighting is nigh non - existent .
To make things even more confusing , cusk eels arenot even rightful eel , as their name would suggest .

While the mystery of the faceless fish is cracked ( for now ) , it seems it might have gained yet another sobriquet .
“ I believe the technical term for a fish with no eye is a ‘ fsh , ’ ” conservation biologist David Shiffman told Gizmodo . HEH .
