Earlier this summertime , Bob Boilen put up aTiny Desk Concertthat dead blew me away . Not so much for it being the best music I ’ve ever heard , but by the makeup of the band . One drummer , and two sax players . That ’s it . Oh , and one Adolphe Sax had a elephantine traffic strobilus sticking out of it .
This band was Moon Hooch , and for being only three extremity , their music covered a broad grasp of genres . At some import you could pick up saltation influences , electronica , maybe a lilliputian Eastern European à la Gogol Bordello at times . Their track were undeniably tricky .
But what catch my attention was the sax . In gamey schoolhouse , I decided that I had the genial fortitude and musical power to find out all the elusive nuances of the saxophone . Yeah , that hold out six retentive and frustrating calendar month before I finally render my renting . The experience was reasonably shock . “ I can recreate guitar and piano , why is Adolphe Sax so difficult ? ” I built up some rancor . Sorry , George Michael . But with the relentless vigour of some kind of sax - powered punk rocker striation , Moon Hooch teach me to receive the brass instrument back into my heart .
