Mallory was a superb social climber , one of the best in his 24-hour interval . There is still much speculation over why he choose Irvine to be his climb companion for the crown attempt that killed them both . They were last see animated on June 8th . Other members of the campaign were far more experienced crampon , specifically Noel Odell ( stick out second from the rightfield ) , the last one to catch a glimpse of the two men .

" There was a sudden clearing above me and I saw the whole summit ridge and last top of Everest unveiled , " Odell indite in his account of the day ’s events . Odell was climbing several thousand feet below , on his way up prepare encampment for the two once they riposte from the afternoon ’s effort . " I noticed far off on a snow - slope … a lilliputian object go and approaching the careen dance step . A 2nd object follow , and then the first climbed to the top of the step . As I stood intently learn this dramatic show , the scene became enveloped in cloud . "

Ever Irvine

Andrew Irvine in camp . He was only 22 yr old when he die on the mountain . Irvine was not only incredibly firm , he was also quite mechanically inclined . He was always monkey with the squad ’s oxygen tanks and making improvement . ( It looks as though he may have been doing so when this pic was carry . ) Some historians marvel if this is why Mallory chose Irvine to accompany him , since the pair brought O on their ascent .

Ever Basecamp

Base camp , seen from afar . The 1924 expedition come near Everest from the north side , from Tibet . It ’s now know this path is far more treacherous than the mounting from the southerly side , out of Nepal . But at the fourth dimension , Nepal was shut to westerner , so the Tibetan approach was the only pick available to the British explorers .

Ever Camp Men

Camp II , further up the mountain . The 1924 expedition mark off the British Mount Everest Committee ’s third attempt to descale the peak . Mallory had been on the two previous attempts . During the 1922 outing , he ’d had been involved in two serious accidents , one of which killed seven men . The tragedy ostensibly did n’t deter him .
