Mallory was a superb social climber , one of the best in his 24-hour interval . He was always monkey with the squad ’s oxygen tanks and making improvement . ( It looks as though he may have been doing so when this pic was carry . ) Some historians marvel if this is why Mallory chose Irvine to accompany him , since the pair brought O on their ascent .

Base camp , seen from afar . The 1924 expedition come near Everest from the north side , from Tibet . It ’s now know this path is far more treacherous than the mounting from the southerly side , out of Nepal .
