Justin Bieberis facing his demons head on.

Multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE exclusively on Tuesday thesinger is receiving counseling for depression, and one insider says the singer is very focused on his mental health.

“His emotions are raw, but he knows that his counseling — however painful — is what he needs as he moves forward with his life,” the insider says about the newlywed, 24, whosecretly married Hailey Baldwin, 22, last fall.

While Bieber’s counseling sessions — which have both spiritual and secular components from pastors and licensed professionals — haven’t been easy, the star is focused on becoming as healthy as possible.

“He’s feeling very positive that he’s uncovering some root issues, and everyone is optimistic that this will help him figure out his next chapter,” says the insider. “He’s going to be a dad someday, and he knows that could happen sooner rather than later.”

When that time comes, the star wants to be sure “he’s got his act together,” adds the insider.

Despite being “very happy” in his marriage with Baldwin, Bieber has been “down and tired” lately, another source previously said.

In his recent interview forVogue‘s March coverwith his new wife, Bieber opened up about how becoming so famous at such a young ageaffected his mental health.

“I started really feeling myself too much. ‘People love me, I’m the s—,’ that’s honestly what I thought. I got very arrogant and cocky. I was wearing sunglasses inside,” he told the outlet as Baldwin emphasized, “At night inside.”

Drugs — and “a legitimate problem with sex” — came with making millions at 20 years old, Bieber admitted.

“I found myself doing things that I was so ashamed of, being super-promiscuous and stuff, and I think I used Xanax because I was so ashamed,” he said.

Naturally, these struggles bled into his career. In 2017, he canceled his Purpose world tour with 14 shows left amid rumors about his mental health.

“Igot really depressed on tour,” he recalled. “I haven’t talked about this, and I’m still processing so much stuff that I haven’t talked about. I was lonely. I needed some time.”
