Danielle Staub‘s ex-husband Marty Caffrey has mixed feelings about theReal Housewives of New Jerseystargetting engagedjust one week after the twofinalized their divorce.
“Even knowing Danielle, it’s a little surprising,” he tells PEOPLE exclusively.
Caffrey, who was married to Staub for 10 months, says he knew Staub was seeing other people but did not hear the news of the engagement directly from her.
“If Danielle is happy, then I’m very happy for her,” he says. “I wished her the best when I divorced her, and I meant it. Danielle and I have both been dating [other people] for a while. I’ll take my time, though.”
“I’m not surprised she met someone, but I’m surprised that she got engaged so fast,” he adds. “It begs a lot of questions. Why did it need to be so fast?”
Still, Caffrey can’t help but laugh at the idea of being roommates with Staub and her new fiancé Oliver Maier.
“I’ll have to ask him how he likes his coffee,” he jokes. ‘I’ll tell him to pick up some milk before he gets here!”

Caffrey and Staub finalized their divorce on Feb. 21, just 10 months after they tied the knot in a lavishBahamas beach ceremonyin May.
On Thursday, PEOPLE exclusively announced Staub’s plans to marry Maier.

“I’m madly in love,” Staub told PEOPLE. “I’m feeling elated and excited for the next stage of my life. I’m going to marry the man of my possible dreams and hopefully I’ll spend the rest of my life in bliss.”
Maier, who is German and French, works as the managing director of Speyside Equity, a private equity firm based out of New York City.
But he told PEOPLE he’s also the Duke of Provence, something Staub says she didn’t know about until recently. Maier said his family owns 15 vineyards in the South of France as well as two castles. Their marriage would mean that Staub would become a duchess.
News of Staub and Maier’s relationship broke Monday when she shared a photo of them kissing on Nikki Beach in front of a rainbow.
